Paul Hamm: Did He Deserve Gymnastics Gold in 2004?
What was the controversy all about?
In the 2004 Olympics, an all-star group of athletes fromaround the world gathered together to compete for titles ingymnastics. In the spirit of competition, there are alwaystensions between analysts and spokespersons about whetheror not athletes deserve the medals they receive.Sometimes, judges are found to be at fault for thecontroversy, and other times the fiasco is trumped up byuneducated speculation. In this case, the Paul Hamm stirwas due to an ancillary error.: the judges mistakenly sethis rival's starting score at 9.9 rather than 10.0. Manybelieve that it is this error that cost Yang Tae Young, theSouth Korean rival of Paul Hamm, the all-around gold medalin gymnastics.
Gymnastics judging is not a science.
This is proven again and again. There is no mathematicalway of measuring gymnastics routines -- in fact, gymnasticsis perhaps one of the most subjective sports of all. Nogoals are involved, as in soccer - no hoops like inbasketball; no bullseyes are involved, as in archery; onedoes not go for distance or height, as in pole vaulting orshot put. In gymnastics, an athlete is judged on form, scored on perfection. It is exceedingly difficult to do soaccurately, as there are no vectors that can be calculatedto see if someone grasps hold of the parallel barsincorrectly or lands with a wobble.
If you have ever been to a gymnastics competition, youprobably understand that panels look at execution for theirscoring: something that is full of twists and turns and ispoorly executed will score lower than something that issimpler but perfectly executed. The criteria for measuringthis aspect of gymnastics include stability and landings --whether or not he or she wavered in the element's terminus,or held position for less than three seconds at the end ofthe routine, or took an extra step or stumbled. This doesindeed lead to criticism of the judges' abilities to dotheir job, and leads also to mistakes in scoring.
Why does Paul Hamm deserve gold?
Paul Hamm, like any other athlete, is and was not a part ofthe politics of the game. He was there to compete, andindeed, he was there to win. This is the goal of thousandsof Olympic hopefuls around the world -- to go to the gamesand to show their skill at the sport they love best. Inall actuality, no athlete should have to deal with thethings Paul Hamm was forced through. It is entirelyunderstandable that he should refuse to give up his medal-- the gold is certainly not tainted; it was his and hisalone. The mistakes of the judges are not his to bear. Heis an incredible gymnast, indeed.
Why does Yang Tae Young, his rival, not deserve gold?
Perhaps more convincing is the reason as to why Yang TaeYoung, Paul Hamm's Korean rival, does not deserve the goldmedal so many have attributed to him. Firstly, the Koreangymnastics team's representative was late in calling in acomplaint, which made the investigation itself - and allthe stress associated with it - completely invalid (Olympicrules state, that a protest needs to be madebefore the end of any full game, such as with the parallelbars, and the Koreans did not do so). Even then, thejudges were suspended, and the probing took place.Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, even if the judgesgave Tae Young the extra .10 points warranted by thedifficulty of his routine, he still would have scored lowerthan he did because of yet another ancillary error. Afterthe tapes were reviewed, it was revealed that Tae Youngaccidentally made four holds on the bars rather than theallotted three, which would have resulted in a deduction of.2, still leaving him with a deficit of a tenth of a point.
The snafu regarding Paul Hamm's gold medal - versus, ofcourse, giving the medal up to the South Korean team - isregretable. There should have been no questionthat Hamm deserved his medal, and he certainly should nothave had to deal with the problems around the world. Nor,indeed, did he deserve all of the ill press surrounding hisname. The gold medal was well-earned. It certainly bearsno tarnishing, and neither does his record.

Opal Jewelry -- Your Own Personal Piece of Rainbow
Opal is a magnificent gemstone whose shades encompass virtually every hue in the color spectrum. The play of color is different on every stone, and its shimmering hues gave rise to the word 'opalescent.' Because it is such an entrancing and unique gemstone, it is no wonder that opal jewelry is very popular among collectors and fashion enthusiasts.
Native American Indian Art Wood Carvings of the Pacific Northwest
Native American Indian art in the American southwest is dominated by the magnificent pottery and jewelry in the region. When it comes to the Pacific Northwest region which covers the states of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia (Canada) and the southern part of Alaska, the Native American art here is mostly wood carvings. This is not surprising since unlike the southwest desert, the Pacific Northwest is abundant with forests which have provided the wood as raw material for the region's Native American Indian art.

Bad Mouthing Fellow Authors
The creative mind is a gift to humanity; but unfortunately it comes with some baggage. We often find people who are creative also have negative and self-defeating personal character flaws. I recently had the pleasure of someone proving this to me. The name of the individual was Ed. You see Mr. Ed condemned my expert status in some articles I wrote and put online. Numerology Is More Than Numbers
Over thiry-five years ago, I picked up a book on numerology and began to have a hard time believing that numbers had anything to do with my life. Shortly thereafter, I was awakened from a deep sleep by a loud voice that seemed to scream into my ears, "Numbers are real!"
Canada is an emancipated country in the relative scheme of things. But it has a dark history that some people aren't aware of, and others would like to keep it that way. In the early 20th century the last Beothuk Indian met her death after various parties encouraged other Indians (Micmac) to hunt people to their extinction. It is true that the Beothuk stole merchandise but it is also true that their culture assumed that what wasn't being used was for the common people to use and that those who weren't using the canoe or boat wouldn't mind if it was borrowed. In time they returned the goods if they were given a chance.

Hip-hop Jewelry and Todays Stars
Watch any of the major movie, television, and music award shows on television today and one of the first things you'll notice about the celebrities on the red carpet, aside from their extravagant (and sometimes outlandish) attire, are the amount and size of the jewelry they are wearing. Hip-hop jewelry, more commonly known as bling-bling, is definitely not understated fashion. The bigger and the flashier it is, the better. Preferred by many of today's celebrities, hip-hop jewelry adorns the fingers, necks, arms, even the teeth of many stars.

Stones have been worn by both women and men since prehistoric times. Just as in the jewelry of modern times, beautiful stones, rare and colorful, are most often the dominant feature of a piece with a metallic setting for ornamentation.

Conspiracies: The Pyramid and the Sphinx
Egypt has long been the source of countless conspiracies, ranging from ancient lost civilizations to extraterrestrial markers. The reason for this focus is likely because Egypt is the most romanticized ancient civilization, and also because it is home to the mystical Great Pyramid of Giza, the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. This article will describe some of the conspiracies surrounding the Sphinx and the Pyramid.

Lance Armstrong Bracelets: Fashion Accessories for a Worthy Cause
Lance Armstrong bracelets, the yellow rubber wrist bands inscribed with the motto LiveStrong, are tangible parts of champion American cyclist Lance Armstrong's legacy. Diagnosed with testicular cancer on October 2, 1996, Armstrong battled with the disease and didn't let it get in the way of his will to wear the yellow jersey once again to compete in the Tour de France cycling tournament. In partnership with sports apparel firm Nike, he started selling his Lance Armstrong bracelets for a dollar apiece, with the profits going to the Lance Armstrong Foundation to fund cancer research.
