Run Towards Fear: A Prescription for Success

Fear, or negative anxiety, is the modern day bubonic plague, infecting millions upon millions of people. It spreads with viral effect, and leaves behind consequences of mediocrity and regret. This ?plague? is partly due to societal influences (particularly in a post-9/11 era) and partly due to individual issues (the tendency to avoid confrontation of that which we fear). However, whatever the cause, a vaccine is available, and it takes the form of moving towards that which we are most afraid of. Immediately.

Individualistic Sucess Models

In individualistic success models, success is not due to the individual?s relationship with his external environment or place in society, but, rather, a matter of individual accomplishment or, in some cases, a measure of his relationship with God. These models had their roots originally in Protestant Calvinism and are the typical ones you will see in ?Success? books.

The American Dream Model

The present model of business and career motivation, the one most closely associated with the ?American Dream? which emphases enterpreuneurship, individual achievement, competition, and domination has been around for at least the last 50 years . Up to the mid 20th century, the predominant prosperity model was the Calvinist work ethic originally derived from the Puritan. The Calvinist work ethic emphasized hard work, saving for the future, and foregoing vacations, paying bills in cash, and foregoing luxuries to save for a rainy day. On the other, the motivation for moneymaking is no longer saving for the future, but, what Thornstein Veblen, the famous 19th century economist characterized as ?conspicuous consumption.? Luxury homes, luxury cars, fancy electronic gadgets, and exotic vacations create the illusion of wealth. The philosophy of the Amway Corporation, now known as Quixtel in the U. S. is a good illustration of the concepts involved.

His Norweigan/Dutch family had endured quite a bit of disaster?wiped out in a storm in Iceland, and then wiped out in the dust bowl. He grew up in a part of California that just had been frontier 40 years prior. He was stern, stubborn rugged individualist and believed that everyone is responsible for themselves. Daddy had no use for religion. He was a doctor, a scientist, who believed that the human body was basically a machine to be fixed up and mended so that it could back to go to work in the orchards, fast food joints, and canneries of the great Central Valley we lived.

Barriers to Prosperity

An odd but frequent barrier to prosperity is the belief that we're the "wrong type" to live an abundant life. This comes down to a whole attitude about ourselves which places us as a "misfit". This is quite usual among those who are on a Spiritual Path. I had this barrier at one time, and have discovered that it's completely irrelevant.
