Childrens Backpack Safety and Comfort

One of the easiest and safest ways to carry your child around is via an infant carrier or baby backpack. Of course, if you plan to take advantage of a backpack it is vital that you follow some key safety tips and recommendations. You can't simply toss your baby behind you and hope for the best, now can you? Aside from this, it is also important that you and your baby are comfortable while riding around in a backpack. There are several strategies you can adopt and features you can search for to ensure your baby and you enjoy a comfortable ride. Let's talk more about each of these below.

Baby Safety TipsSo what exactly do you need to do to make sure your baby or child remains safe while backpacking away? Here are some important considerations:

    1. Always follow the manufacturers directions when placing your baby in a pack or carrier.
    2. Never exceed the recommended weight limits.
    3. Always fasten all loops and buckles.
    4. Protect your child by putting adequate sunscreen protection on them while traveling. They are even more likely to expose their tender flesh to the sun while riding high. Studies suggest that most of skin cancer results from damage done from the sun in the first few years of life. Sun protection should include a wide brim hat. Alternatively, you can select a back pack with a built in sun or rain canopy.
    5. If backpacking far from home with your children, be sure to carry extra water, a first aid kit and a cell phone so you can contact someone in an emergency.
    6. Always wear your baby less than 6 months old in a front pack or carrier.
    7. Take care when releasing your baby you do so slowly and carefully so they don't slip out of the pack or carrier.
    8. Never use your pack once it starts showing signs of excessive wear or tear.
    9. Buy a pack that is well suited for your activities. Some backpacks are more suited for intense hiking while others are perfect for short trips to the grocery store. While you might use a heavy duty pack to haul your child to the grocery store, you should never use a light day pack to take your child on serious hiking trips.
    10. Bring along formulations for insect bites and stings if you plan on packing through the woods with your children.

Comfort TipsWearing your baby can be one of the best experiences you ever enjoy if you do so wisely. One of the key ingredients for successfully wearing your baby is comfort. Your comfort is just as important as your baby's comfort. To promote your comfort:

  • Make sure straps are evenly adjusted to prevent pack from hanging to heavily on one side or the other.
  • Look for a pack with a well padded back and chest pad
  • Consider a pack with a hip or waist belt to help distribute your child's weight more evenly.

To improve your child's comfort, look for a pack with padded harnesses if you plan on traveling long distances with your child. Likewise, a rain or sun shield may provide tremendous relief from the elements. You may even consider a pack with built in toy loops or other accessories that will help entertain your child during long jaunts. Most children however, find the ride itself as much an adventure as any toy or other device you may bring for them. Don't forget to bring along some extra water or juice for you and your child if you intend on running errands or hiking for long periods of time. Just as with a stroller ride, you can expect at some point your child will probably get thirsty or want a drink of water. Fortunately many packs come equipped with handy storage pockets or attachments that allow you to bring all the snacks and beverages you need for a mini day trip!

Last but not least, don't forget that everyone is different. Some parents will prefer a convertible back pack (one that converts from a front to back pack or pack to stroller). Others will prefer a sling, some will want a heavy duty pack and others will want one with minimal accessories. Keep in mind your own personal preferences and needs before searching for a pack. That way you are bound to find one that is comfortable and fun!
